What is Topology in Oil and Gas Mapping?

According to the Encarta English Dictionary, topology is the study of the properties of geometric figures that are independent of size or shape and are not changed by stretching, bending, knotting, or twisting. Topology for those working with digital geographic shapes is the relative positions of polygons in relation to each other. Additionally, topology is spatial accuracy of an individual shape.

In oil and gas, topology is used in the creation of mineral lease polygons, survey lines and ownership polygons.
