Marcellus Challenges

For decades, oil and gas exploration and production companies have been able to benefit from Tobin's vast database of accurate well locations in key oil and gas producing states such as Texas. E&P's have come to recognize the difference between well location data from "free" or low-cost sources and those wells spotted with Tobin's unmatched expertise and 80-year history in the oil patch.

However, well locations in the Marcellus Shale are prone to several errors. Most historic wells in the area were recorded in state ledgers using metes and bounds calls, which take a significant effort to accurately map. Even more modern wells that were filed with the states using GPS contain coordinates that were transcribed incorrectly.

Due to these significant challenges, today's well location data sources for the Marcellus do not include corrected information, even from commercial sources.

P2 Tobin Map Data is the only oil and gas data supplier to offer hand-verified well locations in the U.S., and in 2011 we are bringing this to the Marcellus.

This year, P2 will offer 10,000+ well locations in the Marcellus Shale Play that will be hand-verified using both recent imagery and Tobin's proprietary mapping algorithms. This data will also be available by subscription through our Tobin All Access Online Portal.

Accurate well location data is priceless when the cost of drilling a dry well ranges from $2 million - $8 million. Click here to read more about the true cost of inaccurate data.
